Love Libations - Share some Wine with Your Valentine

Valentine

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love that is observed throughout much of the world. Believed to be named for a saint who was imprisoned for performing forbidden marriages for Roman soldiers in the 3rd century AD, the day has grown from a pagan ritual into what is now a very commercialized affair. Along with gifts of cards, flowers, and chocolates, it is also a day on which one is encouraged to wine and dine a loved one.

While there are many delicious restaurant options all over the island in which to celebrate, a Tuesday night holiday may inspire a more relaxed celebration at home. Whether you are cooking your own gourmet meal or bringing in a favorite take-out or delivery option, there is a wine to make the evening more memorable.

Can a glass of vino bring on that loving feeling? Irish author and poet William Butler Yeats famously said, “Wine comes in at the mouth. And love comes in at the eye.”

Jean Lafitte HotelThere are many inconclusive studies and anecdotal stories on-line suggesting a correlation between wine consumption and better sexual health. These are the types of stories that generate numerous “Likes” when they appear on social media.

While all alcohol has long been known to potentially increase arousal due to its stimulating effect on the brain’s hypothalamus gland, studies in recent years have focused more on wine and its possible effect on the human sex drive. While more studies may be needed, science has confirmed a few things.

Naturally occurring organic compounds called amines are believed to be the chemical reason that wines have an aphrodisiac influence on some people. There are several different kinds of amines, some of the better-known types include histamine which increases alertness and serotonin which promotes feelings of well-being. The effect of these amines can lead to a rise in libidos for some when combined with alcohol’s ability to relax away anxiety and lower inhibitions.

Quercetin, another compound found in red wine, seems to have a stimulating effect specifically on males. It blocks an eliminating enzyme which can lead to elevated testosterone levels which in turn leads to elevated levels of sexual arousal in men.

There are also polyphenols in red wine which appear to increase blood flow to the erogenous zones leading to a potential increase in desire in both sexes. These feelings generated by wine are at their peak after only one to two glasses when partners are happy and relaxed, so, moderation as always, is recommended.

What to drink? Champagne and other sparkling wines have long been considered the top choice for celebrations. Their food friendliness makes them desirable whether you are considering a simple night of snacks or a diverse, multi-course menu.

The most important consideration should be both Valentines’ preferences as well as the meal plan, there is a world of white, rosé and red wines from which to choose. If your significant other prefers white wine (even with steak) that’s the wine to serve.

If a fresh, local seafood meal is the plan, bring in a light, coastal white while a broiled lobster tail drenched in butter may call for a fuller-bodied, richer, oak-influenced Chardonnay. If roasting venison or serving steaks, a more robust red may be in order.

Choosing a heart-smart red wine is always appropriate for a day that is represented by hearts. The options are endless.

What about sweets for a sweetheart? Sweet wines can be consumed throughout a meal if the menu is well thought out. A touch of sweetness can help balance both salty and spicy flavors in food.

The Cajun-spiced cuisine of Mardi Gras offers many opportunities to break out wines with more honeyed flavors. Classic pairings of savory food with sweet wine include Sauternes with foie gras, off dry or sweet Riesling with spicy Thai cuisine, and Ruby Port with Stilton cheese.

Extra Dry Champagne, which has more residual sugar than Brut, can be served with all the previously mentioned foods as well as with popcorn for a sweet take on a movie night date at home.

There really is only one rule, pour what you and your special someone enjoy drinking. It has been said that, “We are all mortal…until the first kiss and the second glass of wine.”

The February holiday of love provides the perfect opportunity to bring romance and vino together. The everlasting memories are waiting to be made so make sure to enjoy the first kiss and then definitely make sure to enjoy that second glass of wine.
