What's New In Galveston

What's New

Galveston has a bustling shopping district, and GM has added a new column to keep its readers up to date on what’s new and cool in G-town. Whether you are looking for a sassy boutique or a bite to eat, be sure to check What’s New before planning your day downtown.

District Rags Boutique
Comb the racks in this fashion forward shop for everything that is trending and current. This unique boutique will have you “feeling the fun” from the moment you walk in the door. Owner and island resident Darla Murray picks from the hottest fashion trends in Texas, New York and Los Angeles.

“I study fashion trends from all over the world and combine it with what’s hot and happening for Texas-- and bring it all here under one roof,” Murray said.

Whether your style is sexy or suave or you’re looking for just the right outfit for a girls’ night out, this shop has it all. District Rags shows the utmost respect for accessories as well as clothing, showcasing dozens of one-of-a-kind jackets, hats, shoes, boots, sunglasses, and handbags.

The constantly changing inventory will keep customers coming back. “I don’t buy the same thing twice,” Murray said. “When a dress or purse sells, it’s gone. I will buy something altogether new—new style, new item, new look.”

Look for seasonal changes to inventory as well. Haven’t mastered your Mardi Gras look yet? District Rags has you covered from ball gowns to beaded bags and everything in between.

Whether your inner cowgirl dances in Daisy Dukes or sports a sundress with cowboy boats, District Rags will outfit you for rodeo also. Murray loves to use locals as models for social media campaigns so if you like your new look, introduce yourself while you shop.

The public is invited to an open house at 4:30pm Friday, February 3. A DJ will be spinning tunes, and sips and light snacks will be served.

The Pink Foyer

The Pink Foyer
Pink Foyer Located across from the Tremont Hotel on Mechanic Street, this fun little sweet boutique opened their doors last December.
The brainchild of three buddies and bakers, Len Pokryfke and Ginny and Doug Levack, this storefront of sweets features meringue, macarons, gourmet cookies, cakes in a jar and cruffles—their custom cookie-meets-truffle dessert.

The self-proclaimed trio of “sweet geeks” has a lot of creative, cookie-making experience. Ginny created her own successful line of cookie decorating tools under the brand Creative Cookiers. She also competed in, and later judged, international cookie competitions for 13 years. Pokryfke perfected the art of macaron-making when a three-month long IT project turned into a two-year stay in Paris, France.

The chefs at The Pink Foyer like to rotate flavors as the seasons change. They are also happy to custom design any sweet treat for your personal or corporate event.

“We’ll make cookies that are light and lemon-y for spring and treats with cranberries and spices for the fall. We can put your company logo on a cookie or bake something special for your anniversary,” Ginny said.

Hours of Operation: Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 9pm and on Sundays from noon to 6pm (Open by appointment for specialty orders)

The Hat Branding Bar at Salty Southern Chic Boutique
The island’s only Hat Branding Bar opened in December 2022 and is located inside the Salty Southern Chic Boutique in Old Galveston Square. This charming addition to an already established store is managed by Robin O’Donnell who is excited to decorate your hat for the upcoming rodeo season.

“Each hat tells a story,” O’Donnell said. “Your hat should tell your story.”
Customers can choose a new hat from the 20-30 different styles and colors currently in stock or bring your favorite hat to the store for customization. “You bring ‘em; we’ll bling ‘em,” O’Donnell said.

There are dozens of decorative combinations to work with. Add a beautiful band or brand a word from a favorite saying or song. Add your sports team or alma mater. Put a feather in your cap or add buttons and bows. O’Donnell will hand distress, brand or mold your hat on premises.

The Hat Brand Bar is stocked with all of the latest styles and trends and was created to cater to your inner Beth Dutton.
